On November 30th 2010 a moderator by the name invisibro made a thread on 4chan‘s /jp/ board with an video advertisement for Giga Pudding. invisibro then showed the thread to 4chan’s owner and founder Christopher Poole known to many on 4chan as “moot”. Moot apparently liked the video so much that he added it at the top of every page on /b/. And then after every message submitted contained the following:

PUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDI
PUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDI
PUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDPUDDIPUDDIPUDDI
PUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDIPUDDI

Many speculate that Moot’s intentions are to cleanse the most popular board on 4chan known as /b/ from users that do not create new content. Though it is hard to say whether this type of strategy won’t also alienate 4chan’s core user base.

Rickrolling is an online joke that involves the music video for the Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up”. The viral content is a trick of disguise: Someone post a link that they claim is something specific, but the link really points to the Astley video. The link can be hidden in some way so that others cannot see it’s true destination. When a user follows the link and is led to the video, they have have been “rickrolled”. Rickrolling has gone further than links to playing the video or song unexpectedly in offline, including in public. The most well known Rick Roll was preformed live by Astley himself during the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Rickrolling began as a spin off of a previous meme from the well know site, 4chan. The original is known as duckrolling.

This is a guest post by Abhigyan Banerjee, who is a student, tech-junkie, and author of tech blog Technokracy.

Blogs have taken over the Internet like wildfire. Every second website you visit these days is/has a blog. While the original purpose of a blog (or Weblog for the traditionalist) was to act as an online diary of sorts, blogs today are major money-minting machines. If you are passionate about something, or feel that you are an authority in your niche, getting online is just as easy as ABC. And we are here to tell you exactly that!

Access:

On the Internet, access is everything. It can make or break your blog. Just having quality content is not enough. You need to present that content in a manner that is accessible to all and sundry. Keep in mind the following points while starting out with a new blog:

Register a domain name: This is one of the more important aspects of a blog. The name of your blog should, simply put, stand out in a horde of blogs. Decide on something catchy, yet unobnoxious, that captures the spirit of what you want to write. Also make sure that you choose the correct host. You don’t want to register with a webhost that can’t even guarantee the security/integrity of your blog during downtime.

Spread the word: You have a totally droolworthy domain. It means zilch if you can’t promote it correctly. Once you have the blog up and running, spend time to tell the world about it. The more you concentrate on spreading the word about your blog, the more people will actually visit it. Use online and offline networking to make the blog reach your target audience.

Blogging Platform:

You have a great idea, you have a great domain name. Now is the time to decide what platform you will use to blog. There are a myriad of choices available. Just based on sheer numbers, I’ll talk about the top three here:

Blogger: Also known as Blogspot, Blogger was THE one service that kicked it off. Owned by Google, Blogger provides a very clean and simple interface to get your blog going. Here’s some advantages of using Blogger:

It’s a Google product, so you can automatically expect the ease of use that Google applications provide.

Since all Blogger blogs are hosted on Google servers, you can expect very good uptimes.

Blogger provides for one of the easiest ways to monetize a blog. AdSense integration is just a few clicks away.

Posterous: Posterous burst onto the blogging scene around last year, and provided the easiest way to start a blog. Many, many established and upcoming bloggers moved to Posterous because of the easy and smooth user experience. All you need to do to get a blog on Posterous is send an email to post@posterous.com (try it out!) with your content.

WordPress: WordPress is by far the leading blogging platform on the web today. It offers two variants. While WordPress.com provides a free service to host your blog on WordPress servers, it is very limited in its functionality. WordPress.org on the other hand, is a solution that can be downloaded and installed on your blog, on your own domain and allows zillions of customization options (Themes, Plugins, etc.).

Make sure you make an informed choice about the platform you use to create your blog. Weigh the pros and cons of each one before you set your sights on one.

Comments:

Blogs and Web 2.0 Apps are all about interaction with your users/readers. Make sure you enable commenting on your blog. By encouraging comments, you are effectively persuading your readers to engage in conversations. This interactivity is what will make many readers want to come back to your time and again.

Also, make sure you encourage your readers to comment about your blog on other websites. This leads to the valuable backlinks that are oh-so-important in terms of search engine rankings.

As long as you have these basics covered, you can expect to have a good (i.e. relatively smooth) start to your blog. Do remember though, that this is only the start of a big effort towards making your blog the next big thing on the Internet.

I wish you all the best with your blogging endeavours.

XXX: They are managed, by us

Joe: ok, and how hard is it to upgrade from a shared package to a dedicated? is there any down time?

XXX: It is not hard at all.

XXX: No downtime is necessary.

XXX: See this page hostgator.com/moving.shtml

XXX: You would purchase the dedicated server, fill out the transfer form, then change the dns.

XXX: Wait for dns to propagate to the dedicated server, then cancel the shared account.

Joe: Thats very helpful……thank you…..this is my last question….do your dedicated servers come with garenteed unicorn protection?

XXX: We are protected from hackers (brute force attack) and DDos attack (UDP flood).

XXX: We use IP tables as our firewall defense. This controls who is allowed on the server.

One weekend while I was still in college I was hanging out with a friend of mine. He was browsing myspace on my computer and stumbled upon one of the many myspace groups that I belonged to. Next thing I hear is, “Hey man, all these people look like you!” When I looked at the screen I said, “that’s because they all have OI” “OI? Whats OI?” OI stands for Osteogenesis Imperfecta – a rare bone disorder that causes bones to fracture easily some times for no apparent reason. One of the common characteristics of folks with OI are similar facial features and blue sclera (which I have both). As my friend continued to browse he would ask me if I knew any of the people on the site. For the most part I didn’t know anyone on that site, except for maybe a few. This shocked my friend and he asked me, “Well, why don’t you know them?” My response was, “Well, its not like we all come from the same village!” And, then I thought, “but that would be cool!”

Years past and I graduated college with a degree in Political Science. While I looked for an avenue to start my career I began developing web sites for non-profits and small businesses. What started as a small part time way to make extra money, developed into a real business with clients from across the country. As time went on, more of my time was devoted to web development, I started to realize the amazing power of the web. A type of power that can transform individuals’ lives. For the first time I wasn’t reading how the internet was changing the world, I was experiencing it first hand!

One of the things that I realized is that the internet not only has the power to bring together lots of people. But it also has the amazing power to bring together groups of people that share a similar life experience but are geographically separated and isolated (like people with OI). Many times it is these types of connections that can be truly transformative.

As a web developer I am naturally creative and am always trying different things. So, when it came time for me to try my hand at developing a social networking portal it only seemed natural for me to develop a site that’s sole intention is to bring people with OI together.

While brainstorming I remembered the conversation I had with my friend in college. Instantly OIVillage was born!

A few nights ago, I read cam across the following. I am truly inspired by it. I think that is incredibly before its time. Especially since it was written in 1996! I think that it captivates the future interpretation of rights and civil society. Probably just as amazing as what it says is who wrote it! Its by non-other than John Perry Barlow who is also responsible for writing many of our favorite Grateful Dead songs!

A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace

by John Perry Barlow

Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.

We have no elected government, nor are we likely to have one, so I address you with no greater authority than that with which liberty itself always speaks. I declare the global social space we are building to be naturally independent of the tyrannies you seek to impose on us. You have no moral right to rule us nor do you possess any methods of enforcement we have true reason to fear.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. You have neither solicited nor received ours. We did not invite you. You do not know us, nor do you know our world. Cyberspace does not lie within your borders. Do not think that you can build it, as though it were a public construction project. You cannot. It is an act of nature and it grows itself through our collective actions.

You have not engaged in our great and gathering conversation, nor did you create the wealth of our marketplaces. You do not know our culture, our ethics, or the unwritten codes that already provide our society more order than could be obtained by any of your impositions.

You claim there are problems among us that you need to solve. You use this claim as an excuse to invade our precincts. Many of these problems don’t exist. Where there are real conflicts, where there are wrongs, we will identify them and address them by our means. We are forming our own Social Contract . This governance will arise according to the conditions of our world, not yours. Our world is different.

Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.

We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth.

We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity.

Your legal concepts of property, expression, identity, movement, and context do not apply to us. They are all based on matter, and there is no matter here.

Our identities have no bodies, so, unlike you, we cannot obtain order by physical coercion. We believe that from ethics, enlightened self-interest, and the commonweal, our governance will emerge . Our identities may be distributed across many of your jurisdictions. The only law that all our constituent cultures would generally recognize is the Golden Rule. We hope we will be able to build our particular solutions on that basis. But we cannot accept the solutions you are attempting to impose.

In the United States, you have today created a law, the Telecommunications Reform Act, which repudiates your own Constitution and insults the dreams of Jefferson, Washington, Mill, Madison, DeToqueville, and Brandeis. These dreams must now be born anew in us.

You are terrified of your own children, since they are natives in a world where you will always be immigrants. Because you fear them, you entrust your bureaucracies with the parental responsibilities you are too cowardly to confront yourselves. In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.

In China, Germany, France, Russia, Singapore, Italy and the United States, you are trying to ward off the virus of liberty by erecting guard posts at the frontiers of Cyberspace. These may keep out the contagion for a small time, but they will not work in a world that will soon be blanketed in bit-bearing media.

Your increasingly obsolete information industries would perpetuate themselves by proposing laws, in America and elsewhere, that claim to own speech itself throughout the world. These laws would declare ideas to be another industrial product, no more noble than pig iron. In our world, whatever the human mind may create can be reproduced and distributed infinitely at no cost. The global conveyance of thought no longer requires your factories to accomplish.

These increasingly hostile and colonial measures place us in the same position as those previous lovers of freedom and self-determination who had to reject the authorities of distant, uninformed powers. We must declare our virtual selves immune to your sovereignty, even as we continue to consent to your rule over our bodies. We will spread ourselves across the Planet so that no one can arrest our thoughts.

We will create a civilization of the Mind in Cyberspace. May it be more humane and fair than the world your governments have made before.
