This is a guest post by Abhigyan Banerjee, who is a student, tech-junkie, and author of tech blog Technokracy.

Blogs have taken over the Internet like wildfire. Every second website you visit these days is/has a blog. While the original purpose of a blog (or Weblog for the traditionalist) was to act as an online diary of sorts, blogs today are major money-minting machines. If you are passionate about something, or feel that you are an authority in your niche, getting online is just as easy as ABC. And we are here to tell you exactly that!

Access:

On the Internet, access is everything. It can make or break your blog. Just having quality content is not enough. You need to present that content in a manner that is accessible to all and sundry. Keep in mind the following points while starting out with a new blog:

Register a domain name: This is one of the more important aspects of a blog. The name of your blog should, simply put, stand out in a horde of blogs. Decide on something catchy, yet unobnoxious, that captures the spirit of what you want to write. Also make sure that you choose the correct host. You don’t want to register with a webhost that can’t even guarantee the security/integrity of your blog during downtime.

Spread the word: You have a totally droolworthy domain. It means zilch if you can’t promote it correctly. Once you have the blog up and running, spend time to tell the world about it. The more you concentrate on spreading the word about your blog, the more people will actually visit it. Use online and offline networking to make the blog reach your target audience.

Blogging Platform:

You have a great idea, you have a great domain name. Now is the time to decide what platform you will use to blog. There are a myriad of choices available. Just based on sheer numbers, I’ll talk about the top three here:

Blogger: Also known as Blogspot, Blogger was THE one service that kicked it off. Owned by Google, Blogger provides a very clean and simple interface to get your blog going. Here’s some advantages of using Blogger:

It’s a Google product, so you can automatically expect the ease of use that Google applications provide.

Since all Blogger blogs are hosted on Google servers, you can expect very good uptimes.

Blogger provides for one of the easiest ways to monetize a blog. AdSense integration is just a few clicks away.

Posterous: Posterous burst onto the blogging scene around last year, and provided the easiest way to start a blog. Many, many established and upcoming bloggers moved to Posterous because of the easy and smooth user experience. All you need to do to get a blog on Posterous is send an email to post@posterous.com (try it out!) with your content.

Wordpress: Wordpress is by far the leading blogging platform on the web today. It offers two variants. While Wordpress.com provides a free service to host your blog on Wordpress servers, it is very limited in its functionality. Wordpress.org on the other hand, is a solution that can be downloaded and installed on your blog, on your own domain and allows zillions of customization options (Themes, Plugins, etc.).

Make sure you make an informed choice about the platform you use to create your blog. Weigh the pros and cons of each one before you set your sights on one.

Comments:

Blogs and Web 2.0 Apps are all about interaction with your users/readers. Make sure you enable commenting on your blog. By encouraging comments, you are effectively persuading your readers to engage in conversations. This interactivity is what will make many readers want to come back to your time and again.

Also, make sure you encourage your readers to comment about your blog on other websites. This leads to the valuable backlinks that are oh-so-important in terms of search engine rankings.

As long as you have these basics covered, you can expect to have a good (i.e. relatively smooth) start to your blog. Do remember though, that this is only the start of a big effort towards making your blog the next big thing on the Internet.

I wish you all the best with your blogging endeavours.

It’s true that hearing aids can cost a lot. Just like a high-definition TV or a new computer, there is a real cost for advanced electronics. The technologies developed for digital hearing aids are amazing both because of their tiny size and their impressive capabilities. But the technology cost doesn’t tell the whole story.

Professional fees

A hearing aid costs hundreds of dollars to make at the manufacturer. However, it is traditionally marked up 10 to 15 times its original cost by the time it reaches the wearer. The reason? Hearing care professionals add their fees for the legitimate time they spend fitting and customizing a hearing aid for each individual patient. You pay a hefty markup on a hearing aid up front when you purchase it.

Lack of insurance coverage

In addition, many people do not find relief from these costs from their insurance policy. In general, most health insurance companies do not offer coverage for hearing aids, although a few companies offer supplemental programs that, for an additional premium cost, will allow some hearing coverage.

Cost often supersedes care

Because of the high costs, many people who could benefit from hearing aids do not seek treatment, or decide against the purchase even when it has been recommended. As a result, many facets of their lives are affected beyond the convenience of good hearing. Work performance may be impaired, there can be personal safety issues, and a link between poor hearing and depression should not be overlooked.

Affordable solutions are emerging

While the cost of traditional hearing aids continues to rise due to additional advances in hearing aid technologies, one company has taken a different direction. The HearAid Company has focused its efforts on bypassing the costs added to hearing aids by professional visits.

HearAid takes the approach of making a digital hearing aid self-fitting and self-adjustable. The company manufacturers hearing instruments with the same hearing technologies used in expensive, proven hearing aids around the world. The aid itself, however, is a “one size fits all” design.

Self-fitting and Self-adjustable hearing aids

By including three sizes of ear buds, HearAid devices are packaged to accommodate a range of sizes that will fit most adults. Perhaps more importantly is the instrument’s pre-configured programs. The HearAid Company studied more than 400,000 audiograms (hearing tests) to determine the most common sound ranges that caused people trouble. Using these results, they configured the HearAid devices with programs to help 90% of people who have mild to moderate hearing loss.

A new approach to the hearing aid industry

This non-traditional tactic is appealing on several levels to people experiencing hearing loss. First, having the independence to fit and adjust a hearing aid personally is more convenient than having to visit a hearing care professional time after time. Second, the price difference of a “ready-to-wear” solution makes the purchase of a hearing aid a viable option more many more people. HearAid sells their instruments starting at $299—a far cry from competitive aids priced $1500-$3200.

HearAid currently offers two models of hearing aids. The HearAid Original, priced at $299 each, is a behind-the-ear (BTE) device that features easy-to-use controls for volume and program selection. The HearAid Micro, priced at $399 each, offers similar hearing advantages and is smaller in size.

Eliminating the “middleman” is a new business model in the hearing aid industry, and one that consumers may very well find appealing. The HearAid Company sells its devices directly to the public via its website, www.HearAidStore.com, or by phone at 877-GO-HEARAID (877-464-3272).

Nope, it’s not a low budget film with half dressed vixens fighting cyborgs from the future. It’s a project that IBM and Caltech researchers say will significantly improve microchips in 2010.

Researchers form Caltech have been learning how to fold microscopic strands of DNA into different shapes over the last few years. Turns out, this really weird hobby has turned out to be quite useful.

By using DNA folded into triangles, IBM has been able to place them as anchor points along the silicon wafer used in microchips. Each micro component can now be placed only 6 nanometers apart as opposed to 45 nanometers apart.

Is it possible that we will see more merging of organic DNA into computer technologies? Absolutely. Especially since our current computing technology could not handle the trillions of complex calculations computed in one human body in one day.

IBM isn’t the only company looking to us old fashioned humanoids for inspiration; a group of researchers based in Europe is also getting in on the action with their anthropomimetic robots.

In past years, robots have been made to look human, very human. But, if you were to take a hatchet to it the insides would look like your PC. Anthropomimetic robots mark a symbolic turn from just mimicking the appearance of a human on the outside to recreating the internal structure as well.

Researchers are using a skeleton made of thermoplastic polymer, actuators that correspond to each muscle and kiteline as tendons. They hope to be able to create the actual fluid movement of humans.

Maybe you don’t need your DNA disruptor just yet, but who knows; in the near future your laptop may need a reminder of whose top dog.

In determining what type of hearing aid is best for your hearing loss and lifestyle, it’s important to be familiar with the hearing aid styles that are available on the marketplace.

Behind the Ear

As the most visible type of hearing aid, behind the ear hearing aids work by determining sound, amplifying it, then carrying that sound to a mold that rests inside your ear canal. Behind the ear hearing devices are versatile and appropriate for almost all hearing loss and all ages.

Open Fit

Think of open fit hearing aids as the updated version of the behind the ear hearing aids. HearAid are open fit devices, which are much smaller, less visible variations of the behind the ear style. A small tube connects to a speaker in the ear canal to amplify sound.

Completely in the Canal

These hearing devices are specifically designed to fit inside the individual’s ear canal, and are the least noticeable design available. They are useful for those individuals whose work or lifestyle calls for long hours on the phone or outdoors, as the hearing devices is shielded from wind noise because of its placement in the canal. As a result, though, completely in the canal hearing aides lack many of the features of other styles.

In the canal

In the canal hearing aids are similar to completely in the canal devices. They are not as deeply molded into the ear canal, making them slightly more noticeable but also allowing for the addition of some basic features like volume control.

Other types include half shell and full shell hearing devices. Most of these types of hearing aids require a custom fitting and visit to an audiologist, which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Some, though, like the HearAid open fit digital hearing aid, are versatile for all sufferers of mild to moderate hearing loss and are available without a doctor’s visit.
