The Atlantic Blue Crab is a native to the waters of Pawleys Island. They can be found in the creeks and inlets of Pawleys and Georgetown. Many of the locals and visitors to Pawleys enjoy spending their relaxing time “crabbingâ€. Crabbing is the act of catching crabs. There are many different methods to crabbing however three are among the most popular in Pawleys Island. The most tedious of the three techniques involves tying a piece of bait to a string or line and luring the crab close enough to the waters edge to scoop them with a net. Great patience and determination is required for this technique but the rewards are worth it! The second method of crabbing evolves using a drop net with bait secured inside. When a crab is believed to be in the net, the net is pulled up and the crab is taken out. The third method of crabbing tends to be the lease taxing and involves little continuing effort. This method requires the use of a “crab trap†or sometimes referred to as a “crabpotâ€. The design of a crab trap can vary widely, but nearly all varieties are made out of wire mesh The crab trap is usually cubical in shape. The crab trap contains two to four "entrances" that allow the crabs to enter, but not exit. Commercial crabbers use larger version of these crab traps.
